FusionXInvest London Announced
Guest Post: Matthew Perks, Co-founder of FusionX Group and CEO of New Energy Events
We at FusionX Group—a partnership of Fusion Energy Insights, Realfin and New Energy Events—are excited to invite you to join us in London on May 18th for FusionXInvest, the first in a series of global events designed to bring capital and investment to the fusion energy industry.
Fusion energy has turned a corner.
Milestones have come thick and fast in recent months, none more significant than the announcement in December that scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California had produced the first fusion reaction that created more energy than it took to start it.
That, in turn, prompted Scott Hsu, Lead Fusion Coordinator for the U.S. Department of Energy, to assert that, “As the technology continues to mature, there will be a point where private investors feel that they must be invested in fusion, and I feel like we’re starting to reach that inflection point.”
The numbers are already impressive. In 2021, investors poured close to $4.5 billion into the industry, a huge uptick over previous years. That capital has flowed largely from governments and ultra-high net worth individuals—Sam Altman, Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, for example.
Behind the scenes, however, a handful of more conventional investors, like pension funds, insurance companies and sovereign wealth funds, have quietly been investigating fusion. Some have taken the leap. The mainstreaming of fusion among capital-providers has begun.
How can we accelerate this process and draw new capital to the table?
We need -
- Access. All market participants under one roof in an investment-centric environment.
- Insight. Direct from industry insiders and existing investors, what is the timeframe for commercialization and revenue, and how does that translate into robust investment decisions?
- Community. A place where investors and financiers can listen, learn and develop relationships with peers and leading lights from the fusion industry.
FusionXInvest is our response to those needs.
What do we have planned? Over the course of May 18th we’ll be exploring fusion through the prism of the investor over a series of interviews, case-studies and panels.
Then, on May 19th, for those who want to get closer to the action, we’ll be visiting the UKAEA Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (the UK’s national fusion laboratory), Tokamak Energy, and First Light Fusion.
We invite you to explore the FusionXInvest agenda on the event website.
For those who are ready to take the plunge, registration is now open. At the Savoy IET we have a beautiful venue but do bear in mind that space is limited and we will only be able to accommodate the first 150 or so to sign up.
As always, we'd love to hear from you if you have any thoughts or questions. We look forward to seeing you in London in May!
