Welcome to our round-up of what’s been happening in fusion and within Fusion Energy Insights over the past month.

3 Top Fusion News Stories

First Light Fusion raises £25m first close to advance FLARE concept

First Light Fusion has announced a £25m (US $33m) first close of a new funding round, meaning they have secured initial capital from investors ahead of a final close. The round was led by East X Ventures and the Starmaker One fund, with participation from UKAEA and existing investors.

The funding will accelerate development of First Light's FLARE concept, an inertial fusion approach targeting high energy gain. The company is pursuing a commercial partnering strategy alongside its core technology development. The round also supports expansion of its simulation, testing and broader commercial activities across fusion and adjacent markets.

UKAEA unveils 2026–2030 fusion roadmap and SME guide

UKAEA has published its 2026–2030 strategy, setting out the role of its National Fusion Laboratory alongside the commercial arm, UK Fusion Energy (UKFE). The strategy reflects a shift in how the UK organises fusion delivery, separating long-term research capability from plant delivery while aligning both under a single mission to deliver fusion and maximise UK economic benefit. The roadmap lays out specific goals of UKAEA Group to 2030, clarifying the immediate next steps of the UK's national fusion program.

ARPA-E awards record $135m to accelerate commercial fusion

The US Department of Energy's ARPA-E programme will invest $135m to tackle key technical barriers to fusion commercialisation. This is the agency's largest fusion investment to date, targeting areas such as plasma heating, fuel cycles, power conversion and novel plant designs. Funding will be distributed across multiple competitive programmes focused on high-risk, pre-commercial challenges. The initiative aims to complement private investment by addressing problems that are not yet commercially viable to fund.

Each Region Is Running Its Own Fusion Race

This was our industry analysis “Graph of the Month” piece this time.

Every month, our industry experts at Fusion Advisory Services pick an interesting graph from the work that has been going on at FAS—something that gives some insight into significant trends, commercialisation considerations or fusion industry development.

This month, we examined expected spending on upcoming fusion machines to 2035 across the US, Europe, the UK and Japan. The result shows four distinct strategies emerging for how countries plan to reach fusion energy.

This matters because analysis of these strategies reveals how national ecosystems, industrial strengths and research history are shaping what the future fusion landscape might actually look like.
